June 22, 2009
On June 17, 2009, Shields Reserves began managing all course video reserves and video checkout services. The Hart Media Distribution Lab no longer operates a video library or related services.

As part of this transition, the Hart Media Distribution Lab transferred over 500 DVDs and hundreds of VHS titles that had been upgraded to DVD. All items have been or will be cataloged in Harvest and Melvyl this summer. One benefit to this cataloging is subject and keyword searches are now possible. (Click here for instructions on how to search for videos in Harvest).

Videos listed in Harvest can be checked out from the Shields Reserves desk by any campus affiliate with a valid campus ID card. If the video is on loan to another patron, you can "request" the video directly from the online holding record. The normal loan period for library video holdings is three days. This period allows adequate time for classroom showings and helps keep items available for other users.

If you had used the Hart MDL Course Reserve service, your material will now be managed by the library specialists at Shields Reserves. Course media lists can be created via an online form or in-person at the Shields Reserves Desk. Your course list can include both your personal items as well as library holdings listed in Harvest. You can also include non-video material, such as books and periodicals. (Click here for instructions on how to create a course reserve list and how to add video items to it).

The loan period for Course Reserve videos can be either 2 or 3 hours. It will be important to select the more appropriate period to allow adequate time for viewing, but also to avoid subjecting viewers to overdue fines (http://library.ucdavis.edu/dept/access/reserves/fine.php).

To support Course Reserves videos, eleven combination VCR and DVD players, and two region-free DVD players, are available in room 163 east of the Reserve Desk. Each viewing station has 2 pairs of headphones.

Please note, Shields Library abides by all U.S. copyright laws and campus policies (http://library.ucdavis.edu/ul/about/policies/cprtplcy.php). Please consider examining your video collection to ensure you have documented copyright permission for any derivative works in your collection (e.g. duplicated or burned DVDs or copied VHS tapes). If you need assistance in obtaining legal copies of your video material, consider the Undergraduate Instructional Improvement mini-grant offered by the Teaching Resources Center (see link below).

Academic Technology Services and Shields Library staff have worked closely together to ensure an effective and efficient transition and help you understand the library's policies and procedures. If you have additional questions, please email labmanager@ucdavis.edu
