The Summer Talks: Careers in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine series is presented by the faculty in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UC Davis Health during summer 2020. The presenters talk about career paths in pathology and laboratory medicine, exciting research, clinical laboratory medicine, and describe a typical day in their professional life. These talks are aimed at undergraduate students and others interested in health sciences and medicine.
Our speaker on Thursday, July 16 is Dr. Nam Tran, M.S., Ph.D., Professor and Senior Director, Clinical Pathology, in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UC Davis.
Dr. Tran is an expert in point of care (POC) testing and focuses his research on the development and application of novel medical tests in high-risk populations such as severely burned patients (molecular techniques and novel biomarkers of injury). His research interests also include the development and application of new molecular pathogen detection methods, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacogenetics. Dr. Tran is a Board-Certified Clinical Chemist and he oversees Clinical Chemistry, Special Chemistry/ Toxicology, and POC Testing, as Director of Clinical Chemistry at UC Davis Health. His work has expanded to involve AI and Machine Learning for acute kidney injury and sepsis in at-risk populations.
