Dr. Werner is a Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Ophthamalogy. He was hired in 2000 and he retired in 2020. His research is concerned with the neurophysiological computations and mechanisms that mediate human vision, particularly changes in vision across the life span and in diseases of the retina and optic nerve. He studies both normal aging and age-related diseases leading to blindness. He is inteerviewed by his friend and colleague, Erin Bauer.
