On Friday, April 7th, the ATS April DOLCE featured presentations from faculty in Psychology and Computer Science. Dr. Cam Hostinar spoke on “Promoting Student Engagement in Large Courses,” while Matthew Buttner spoke about “Insisting Students Plan for Success.”
Dr. Cam Hostinar is an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department. Dr. Hostinar joined UC Davis in 2016 and has been teaching health psychology and child development ever since. She directs the Social Environment and Stress Lab, which engages more than a dozen undergraduate students each quarter in hands-on research related to protective factors against stress. Dr. Hostinar received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Psychology Department in 2020, from the College of Letters and Science in 2022, and from the Academic Senate in 2023.
Matthew Butner is a lifelong Aggie. He originally joined UC Davis in 2008 as an undergraduate, enrolled in the Computer Science Masters program in 2012, and was hired as a lecturer here in 2014. He enjoys helping his students master the skills and mindset needed to become successful programmers. Butner discussed his past failed attempts to get students to plan out their projects, his current solution using the Prairie Learn Question System, and future strategies to ensure students plan for success.
