This workshop will introduce you to cloud computing, Amazon Web Solutions’ infrastructure (including AWS Regions and Availability Zones), and the types of workloads that are a good fit for AWS. This session includes a hands-on component where you will launch a compute instance and install R on AWS using a graphical user interface (GUI). The last 30 minutes of this workshop are reserved for Q&A and continued practice on the platform.

Note that while this workshop is similar in lecture-content to the “Introduction to AWS with Juypter Notebooks,” it does NOT require prior experience with Python and Jupyter notebooks as it will use the AWS GUI.

Prerequisites:

• Registration is required for this workshop.
• No prior experience with AWS is necessary.
• You will need access to a computer with a ssh client (example for Windows and using PuTTY) and be familiar with working on web interfaces.

• Identify good use cases for research on AWS
• Navigate the AWS Management Console
• Launch and Terminate an EC2 compute instance and install R Studio (or other package).
