This workshop will introduce you to cloud computing, Amazon Web Solutions’ infrastructure (including AWS Regions and Availability Zones), and the types of workloads that are a good fit for AWS. This session includes a hands-on component where you will launch a compute instance and install R on AWS using a graphical user interface (GUI). The last 30 minutes of this workshop are reserved for Q&A and continued practice on the platform.
Advanced registration is REQUIRED for this workshop. UC Davis DataLab Affiliates and UC students have priority registration. Registration coming soon.
Note that while this workshop is similar in lecture-content to the “Introduction to AWS with Juypter Notebooks,” it does NOT require prior experience with Python and Jupyter notebooks as it will use the AWS GUI.
Prerequisites:
- Registration is required for this workshop.
- No prior experience with AWS is necessary.
- You will need access to a computer with a ssh client (example for Windows and using PuTTY) and be familiar with working on web interfaces.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:
- Identify good use cases for research on AWS
- Navigate the AWS Management Console
- Launch and Terminate an EC2 compute instance and install R Studio (or other package).
