This interview is with Richard Grotjahn, Professor Emeritus of Land, Air, and Water Resources. He was hired in 1982 and retired in 2020. Dr. Grotjahn is a leader in the analysis of extreme weather events and
geophysical fluid dynamics. Professor Grotjahn is valued as a teacher and has
taught weather analysis and prediction courses in classes ranging from general
education to the graduate level. His research record is documented in several
books (e.g., The Encyclopedia of Weather and Climate Change: a visual guide and
Global atmospheric circulations: observations and theories) and numerous
research papers. His service is also distinguished. He has served as chair of the CAES executive
committee and a UC Davis representative to the state-wide University of
California senate. He was also active in meteorological organizations (The
University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and the National Center for
Atmospheric Research) and has served as president of the International
Commission on Dynamic Meteorology. He is interviewed by his departmental
colleague Professor Emeritus Wendy Silk from the Department of Land, Air, and
Water Resources.
