This interview is with Ching-Yao Fong, Distinguished Professor of Physics Emeritus. He joined UCD Physics Department in 1968 and retired in 2019.
His research focused on the design of new spintronic materials, in particular half metals having the largest magnetic moment, based on numerical calculations. A half metal exhibits metallic properties in one of its spin channels while the other channel exhibits semiconductor properties. He has authored two books on the subject, Half-metallic materials and their properties published in 2013 and Recent progress in silicon-based spintronic materials published in 2015. His honors include being elected as Fellow of both the American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics of United Kingdom.
He is interviewed by his friend and colleague, Shirley Chiang, Professor of Physics.
