This interview is with Janet Fay Roser, Professor Emerita of Animal Science. She was appointed in 1986 and retired in 2015.
Jan’s research focuses on the endocrine, paracrine and autocrine events in the mare, stallion, boar, elephant and other exotics that operate to initiate, sustain and regulate target organs. She showed that recombinant equine follicle stimulating hormone and recombinant equine luteinizing hormone cause superovulation in the mare and she now has a company that will market recombinant equine follicle stimulating hormone in the future. She has published over 120 scientific journal articles.
She has engaged in outreach that included advising stakeholders. She worked with University Extension to establish two horse-packing courses in the wilderness. She also established Horse Day, equine breeding courses and the West Coast Equine Reproduction Symposium with the support of the Department of Animal Science, UC Davis.
Jan’s teaching interests include Horse Husbandry, Horse Production and Management and Equine Reproduction. She developed the Stud and Foal Management Internships at the Horse Barn which have become very popular with the students.
She is interviewed by her friend and colleague, Mary Delany, Professor Emerita of Animal Science.
