This interview is with Warren Pickett, Distinguished Professor of
Physics Emeritus. After an 18-year career at the Naval Research
Laboratory, he came to Davis as Professor of Physics in 1997 and served
as Department Chair from 2008 to
2011. He retired in 2021.
His research has focused on theoretical aspects of condensed matter
physics, particularly electronic structure and properties of quantum
materials. His interest has focused on magnetic and superconducting
behavior of solids, with some emphasis on magnetic
materials that also become superconducting. He has received several
awards, including appointment as Fellow of the American Physical
Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and
the U. K. Institute of Physics. One interesting assignment
occurred after his two-week trip in 2014 to four universities in Iran,
after which he was appointed by Chancellor Katehi as UC Davis Liaison to
Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, where he remains an Adjunct
Professor.
He is interviewed by his friend and colleague, Barry Klein, Professor
Emeritus of Physics after serving UC Davis since 1992 as Professor and
Chair of Physics, as Vice Provost, and as Vice Chancellor of Research.
